Loot Crate joins the game-subscription service market

Loot Crate, the flagship nerd-toy, pointless gadget subscription service, has announced that it's partnered with Chrono.gg to begin offering indie games as part of its new subscription service called Loot Play. It will bring them similar sort of random monthly rewards, but in the form of indie games that it claims will be "high quality," and "highly curated."

"We want to help subscribers find new games that are curated with a focus on creative new voices, and we want to help these independent studios reach new audiences through our large network of Looters," Loot Crate VP of product marketing, Erik Reynolds, said to PCGamer. "Loot Play will be Loot Crate’s first digital subscription product and will open the door for the company to continue its growth through digital offerings, redefine collecting and explore the relationship fans have with content."

Operating in a similar manner to other game subscription services like Humble Monthly Bundle, each month will have a single, main game that makes up the bulk of the value of the service, with four periphery games that will join it each month. The first flagship game for the first month of the service will be Crossing Souls, an homage to the '80s with pixellated graphics and a story about kids saving the world, as they are want to do.

Loot Play will cost $10 a month if you pay for an annual subscription up front, or $12 a month on a rolling basis. It's only available in the U.S. for now, but if it proves successful it will likely roll out across the world as there's little stopping such a digital service from expanding.
