Valnir Rok challenges you to survive in a viking world

Survival games are a dime a dozen and many different settings are available for intrepid survivalist gamers. Whether you're looking for a zombie infested island to explore in DayZ, a snowy landscape to wander around in The Long Dark, or fancy a quirky, brass-sounding cartoonish take on the genre with Don't Starve, there's plenty of ways to push your abilities to the limit. But have you ever tried surviving as a Viking?

That's the basis for a new game from independent developer Encurio called Valnir Rok. It's set in a large, open world and will be multiplayer, so you'll be trying to survive with friends and enemies alike. There are huge monsters to battle, meat to cut from their corpses and mead to drink in Viking halls. But you'll need to stay alive to experience all of it.

The vibe of the announcement teaser is a little Skyrim-like, but with multiple players running around the Nordic-island, exploring its vast hills and plains and its cavernous underbelly of ancient ruins and caves. There's also a vibe of War of the Vikings in its combat, which looks skill-based from early footage, though we'll need to learn more about the game to know for sure.

The survival elements are strong though and show players building fires, constructing log-cabins and gradually building up their villages in a world filled with monstrous threats and those from other players and clans. We're also told there will be crafting for weapons and armor, trading in established settlements, jobs to complete, bounties to fulfill and even the chance to gain the favor of the gods.

You don't have long to wait if you're keen to try Valnir Rok out for yourself, as it's set to launch on Steam Early Access in September.
