If you like the look of the Nintendo Switch but feel like its existing 2017 configuration isn't quite to your liking, then 2019 is the year Nintendo will change your mind. Before the end of the it, two new versions of the portable home console are expected to launch, perhaps as soon as the summer 2019.
The first of the two options will be an enhanced one with more powerful internal hardware. Developers already have access to the prototype of the system, which is said to be more capable so as to target a more hardcore gamer audience. It's not clear how powerful this new system will be, but according to it won't be up to par with the Xbox One X or the PS4 Pro. If it could match parity with the original consoles, or hit something like the Xbox One S level of performance, we might see some noticeable improvements in frame rate or visuals in certain games that can take advantage.
The second version of the Switch that is expected to debut this year is a cheaper variant. This one will lack some of the more advanced features of the switch, such as controller-specific vibrations. Designed as more of a replacement of the 3DS, than an alternative to the Switch -- although it will still have access to the same content library -- we would expect it to launch around the same time as the higher-end variant, though likely a few weeks or months before hand.
Both systems are designed to encourage a return to high-sales for the Switch which has declined slightly this year and is expected to decline further next year. 17.9 million Nintendo Switch consoles were sold in 2018, with 17.4 expected to sell in 2019. Some new versions could help revitalise the console's sales to keep its momentum moving forward.
