Subnautica standalone expansion turns the ocean ice cold

Subnautica's aquatic adventures on an alien planet are set to become bigger, broader, and deeper, with a touch of frost on the ocean wind. The Below Zero expansion will introduce chilly waters and a whole host of new creatures, consumables, and biomes to explore when it's released later in 2018.

That will, however, only be the Early Access version of the expansion. Much like the base game, developer Unknown Worlds will take the expansion through a lengthy EA program to drip feed features, content, and get feedback from the community of players as it goes.

Players expecting to have somewhere new to swim off to from their expansive base in the Subnautica base game will be disappointed however, as this expansion will take players to an entirely different part of the planet known as 4546B. There players will have to contend with thermal management, as well as hydration and food levels, new icy biomes on land and below the waves and a whole host of other dangers and exciting places to explore.

PCGamesN has it that the Sub Zero expansion will have a map about 1/6 the size of the base game, so dramatically smaller, but still expansive. The additional content should add an extra 10-20 hours to the game, offering plenty of content to enjoy that no doubt some modders will bring over to the base game too.

The real question though, is whether that reaper leviathan can make it to the icy waters. They seem to follow you just about everywhere else.
