Star Citizen is free next weekend for a whole week

Star Citizen, the game that broke all records for crowdfunding by a country mile and continues to stretch that lead on a daily basis, still isn't ready after six years in development. But it's getting there. And to encourage everyone to come and check out its universe populated by players who have paid, in some cases, thousands of dollars, to have powerful ships right from the get go, is going to be free this coming weekened.

Starting on Friday, November 23 and running through December, anyone can download and play the game for free. You'll be able to try out every playable and flyable vehicle in the game, flying around an expansive universe -- although there is currently just one explorable planet, Hurston.

Hurston is described as a living, breathing planet, with its own ecosystems, cities with NPCs, and vast vistas to enjoy. The game still looks beautiful, although it's not quite as stark a leap in visual fidelity today as it was when Star Citizen was first debuted all those years ago as a Kickstarter campaign.

That planet was debuted in October, but this free week is largely a more impressive unveiling, as it marks the game hitting Alpha 33, and the game's six-year anniversary.

Will you be taking up Cloud Imperium on its offer of a free game week?
