Sony IS Considering Serial Numbers For PS3 Games

It has been nearly a month since hackers managed to destroy PlayStation 3's security and Sony hasn't come up yet with a counter plan, even though it maintains a position that the fix is just a firmware update away.

Online rumors have it that Sony has decided to employ anti-piracy techniques used in PC games as they don't rely on hardware DRM. More precisely, it seems that Sony has decided to use serial numbers to ensure the uniqueness of PlayStation 3 games.

If this turns out to be true, it would be very inconvenient for PS3 gamers who will have to use gamepads to enter lengthy codes then go online to authenticate the key with Sony's servers. It might also kill PS3 games lending and renting if Sony decides to tie each serial number to its owner's PSN account.
