Sony Admits PlayStation VR Can't Match Oculus Rift's VR Quality

PlayStation executive vice president Masayasu Ito admitted that the company's upcoming PlayStation VR won't match the Oculus Rift in terms of VR quality.

"If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR," he told Polygon. "However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC."

The Oculus Rift requires a PC equipped with a Core i5, 4GB of RAM and an NVidia GeForce 970 at least. A PC meeting those minimum requirements costs around $1,000. On the other hand, the PlayStation costs a third of that price and there are more than 35 million units already in gamers' hands.

"The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It’s more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable," explained Ito. "This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It’s for the mass market."

The Oculus Rift is scheduled for release on March 28th, 2016 and is priced at $600. The PlayStation VR is set for release in the first half of 2016. Sony didn't announce the headset's price yet, but several executives said that the company is treating it as an "affordable... new gaming platform," which puts it at around the $400 mark.
