Samsung Gear VR lets Australians dive in the middle of the desert

As much as gamers around the world are excited by the concept of virtual reality, with only 100,000 Oculus Rift DK2s out in the wild, there are still a lot of people that have no idea about it. As relatively unknown as the technology is though, the mobile equipped Samsung Gear VR headset is even more obscure, which is why Oculus/Samsung have been using some unique demos to showcase its capabilities.

Such as opening a scuba diving store in the middle of a desert.

Understandably the residents of Alice Springs in central Australia were pretty confused by this, so when they went in and were offered a chance to try diving for the first time, they jumped at it. Albeit with some asking "where is the water?"

Taken in to the back of the shop, they were equipped with a Samsung Gear VR headset and a pair of headphones and before long, they were whisked under the water where they got to view fish, the serene blue ocean and a few other things.

Needless to say, they were suitably impressed.

While the Gear VR might look like a much more polished product than the Rift DK2, it's still in the developmental phase. We can expect consumer versions of this and the Rift within the next 12 months. Hopefully.
