Samsung is making its own virtual reality headset separate from the previous Gear VR release. While it hasn't announced as such, we know it's in the works thanks to a leak in a partner press release that mentions that very specific hardware. It's called the Exynos VR III all-in-one head mounted display.
More than that even, UploadVR actually found one of these headsets at a trade show and managed to snap a picture of it alongside some specifications, giving us a very real look at what this new headset will be capable of. It comes with a built-in ARM Makli G71 MP20 GPY graphics processor, twinned with a M2 Dual 2.5GHz CPU. Purportedly this enables it to run some experiences at 4K resolution at up to 75 frames per second, or 3440 x 1440 pixels at 90 frames per second.
The system looks to have four front-facing cameras, which should enable hand tracking and inside-out-tracking, meaning no external sensors are required. We're also told that the system can handle eye-tracking, which opens up exciting possibilities for field of view changes in-game, but also foveated rendering to reduce the load on the system's on-board processors.
It's not clear what Samsung plans to do with this headset, but as a prototype, it's likely a reference design for future consumer releases. It will be a little underpowered compared to its PC-bound counterparts, but with a 4K screen and inside out tracking, it should be able to create some pretty compelling experiences for people.
