Samsung 860 QVO SSDs now available up to 4TB

Samsung has a brand new series of SSDs known as the 860 QVO range and it's rather large compared to its predecessors. Available in capacities all the way up to 4TB, the new drives offer huge storage capacities with comparable performance to some of Samsung's more performance-focused ranges. They aren't going to trump NVMe and M.2 drives, but for a SATA-III interface, these drives deliver.

The new drives are in the 2.5-inch form factor and use Samsung's own 4-bit MLC V-NAND flash memory. There have been some reports of lower durability and shorter lifespans of this type of memory, but as with most SSDs, you are likely to upgrade these before you see them degrade significantly. They feature 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM inside for caching in the 4TB model, 2GB in the 2TB and 1GB in the 1TB, as per Hexus.

Read and write speeds are rated at 550/520MBps sequentially, with random read/write speeds reaching a reasonable 97/89K IOPS.

The new drives ship with a three year limited warranty and start at $150 for the 1TB model. We don't have final pricing for the 2TB and 4TB versions, but expect them to be under $500, which should make these rather good value for money. However, due to the greater reliability of hard drives at higher capacities -- and the still better pricing at that sort of size -- we'd likely still recommend smaller, faster SSDs for main boot and game drives, and a larger storage drive in the form of a multi-terabyte HDD.

Still, if you want higher capacities in smaller form factors, these SSDs aren't a bad choice. They should be on sale at your respective retailer in the near future.
