Ryzen Threadripper 2 CPUs get monster new packaging

The second generation of AMD's top of the line Ryzen Threadripper CPUs are just around the corner and with that in mind, we have our first look at the newly monstrous packaging. The up-to-32-core CPUs come in a huge box with a clear front window that showcases the new design in epic fashion.

Box shots were snapped by VideoCardz and show the chips hidden inside a faux-exploded wall of polygons. The front of the packaging has a clear plastic window to show off the chip itself, backed by a fire-like orange wall behind it. The front lid flips open to give a better look at the chip and access to manuals and installation tools.

This is an "upgrade" over the first-generation Threadripper chips which already featured a large box with a clear front window. This time AMD has doubled down with a box that will certainly look impressive on store shelves -- even more so than it will on digital storefronts.

The new Threadripper CPUs look poised to become some of the most powerful multithreaded CPUs in the world. They start at 24 cores with 48 threads, and go all the way up to 32 cores and 64 threads -- a doubling of cores and threads from their first-generation predecessors. Despite this hike, there are claims that all cores can run at up to 4GHz when cooled by air, so the potential for even greater performance when super cooled is there in spades.

While Threadripper is overkill for gaming, these chips could be fantastic for productivity and anyone using heavily multithreaded software could see an enormous increase in their system's performance during certain applications.
