Through his Twitter account, Sony Computer Entertainment president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that an upcoming firmware update will allow PlayStation 4 owners to dim the DualShock 4's light bar. However, it won't be possible to turn it off completely.
@geoffkeighley no, I said dim the LED, not turn off

DualShock 4's light bar is tracked by the PS4 camera to enable motion-detection for games that support it. Additionally, games such as Thief and Shadow Fall use it to convey extra information to the player.
Sony has also promised upcoming PlayStation 4 firmware updates to improve the console's sharing, streaming and game pre-loading options.
