Pokémon Go player hits rank 40, quits the game

With the world and his dog wandering around their neighbourhoods trying to catch Pokémon right now, it's no surprise that a lot of people wondered what would happen when they reached the game's maximum rank of 40? Would they unlock a new Pokémon to catch? Would the Master Ball item that is known to be in the game code, appear randomly in their inventory?

Would they get a shot at taking on Mew or MewTwo?

Nope, none of that. It turns out that if you hit the maximum level you do get a lot of stuff, but nothing that's really game changing. You get yourself 40 Hyperballs, 40 Super potions, 40 super revives, 40 berries, four incense dispensers, four lucky eggs (though what the point of experience after level 40 is, I don't know), four incubators and four lures.

All great gear, but not exactly life changing for someone who must have spent hundreds of hours playing the game...

Nope. This individual used a bot to get there. That's why they stayed away from Gyms, as it wouldn't be fair to compete with people playing the game properly and why they plan to delete their account now they've made it.

Even at its peak performance though, earning the player around 280,000 XP per hour, it took the bot almost two days to complete level 39-40, where five million XP is required. To give that some context, using captured Pokémon alone, you'd have to capture 50,000 Pokémon.
