Nvidia RTX overstock forces UK price drops

A UK retailer has knocked off as much as $200 off of some of Nvidia's RTX Turing graphics cards across the board. Although not all GPUs have seen the same size discounts, everything from the RTX 2060, through to liquid-cooled versions of the RTX 2080 Ti have been discounted, leading to a massive upsurge in purchases. According to the company's marketing lead, it's sold more RTX cards in the past 24 hours than in the past few weeks.

Nvidia's RTX Turing graphics cards are powerful, but expensive. The 2080 Ti custom versions can reach $1,500 in some cases and even RTX 2060 cards can cost upwards of $400 for overclocked versions. In the UK, with 20 percent sales taxes on everything, those prices can reach far higher than even that, but at least they can enjoy some discounts now. Such price drops may even lead to reductions elsewhere too, as other retailers try to match the pricing.

Overclockers UK was reportedly able to acquire a number of cards at a lower cost than usual due to bulk buying up unreleased stock before the end of the financial quarter. This let it in turn, pass those savings on to the consumer. Cards have been discounted by $30-50 for the RTX 2060 and 2070, by up to $100 on the RTX 2080, and in a couple of instances, more than $150 for the 2080 Ti, as per WCCFTech.

None of this means that Nvidia will make any global price drops of its own, nor that US retailers will follow suit, but if there is some excess stock going around (suggesting Nvidia's claims of high RTX sales are bogus) then we may see some price drops soon. We'd certainly expect to see greater reductions by mid-year when AMD's Navi is expected to debut.
