NVIDIA Drops Gaming 3-Way SLI Support From GeForce 1080

NVIDIA previously promised that Pascal GPUs would support 3-way and 4-way SLI. Now, it seems that the company has rescinded those plans and will stick to its 2-way SLI limit.

In a statement to PC Perspective, NVIDIA explained that getting even 3-way SLI to work with games is a very tricky endeavor for a feature that won't be used by the vast majority of users. As such, the company decided to focus its efforts on optimizing 2-way SLI and making sure it runs as smoothly as possible.

NVIDIA noted that DX12 and NVIDIA VR Works SLI technology allows developers to directly implement and control multi-GPU support within their games without requiring SLI-support in the drivers. NVIDIA welcomes developers to use those technologies to support 3-way or 4-way SLI, but we doubt any game development studio will bother.

NVIDIA will continue to support 3-way and 4-way SLI but only for a limited set of specific non-gaming applications including Fire Strike, Unigine and Catzilla.
