There have been a number of iconic mobile devices over the years. The original iPhone, the Motorola Razr, the Nokia 3310. Nokia's 8110 though was also a standout in its time, especially since it was linked with The Matrix movie. Originally released in 1999, it featured a slide-out keypad and in the movie at least, helped Thomas Anderson, AKA Neo, nearly fall to his death on the outside of an office building.
The actual handset wasn't quite so impactful, but it was well known and recognizable. Nicknamed the banana phone for its slightly curved shape, the device is now going to make a comeback as an updated feature phone for those who love a dose of nostalgia. It's even going to come in a fetching shade of yellow.
Following on from the successful rerelease of Nokia's 3310, it's now relaunching the banana phone as the "Nokia 8810 4G" with high-speed data connectivity, a compact screen, the classic physical button layout and a few basic applications. It runs a custom feature-phone OS called KaiOS, according to ArsTechnica, which is an old fork of Firefox OS. It will be able to run HTML5 apps like Facebook, Google Maps, Google Assistant. It will also come preloaded with the Snake game for all of your retro gaming needs.
Internally it's said to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 SoC, which features two 1.1GHz A7 CPU cores, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and a 2MP rear-facing camera. It can connect to a network over 4G LTE, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi or Bluetooth 4.1 It also has a microUSB 2.0 jack for charging, a headphone port and FM radio functionality.
It's not a fast device by any means -- smartwatches should be more capable -- but if you want a nostalgia-driven backup phone for when yours is next in the shop, it's not too terrible. Its launch price, when it becomes available in May, will be $100.
