The Nintendo Switch offers portable and home gaming in one

Nintendo finally announced its new console yesterday, which for a long time we've only known as the codename NX. Now though we know it's called the Switch and much more, following the big reveal.

The Switch is an amalgamation of a portable and home console, offering truly mobile gaming at the same detail level as the living room version, a real focus on local gaming, unified controls which are the same regardless of setting and a new, somewhat surprising focus on Esports.

Nintendo hasn't told us about the specifications - though they are rumored to give it around the GPU power of an original Xbox One - nor what the launch library will be. However we did see Zelda, Skyrim, Splatoon and Mario Kart in the trailer, along with a new NBA Live game, so Nintendo appears to be looking to cater to both hardcore and more mainstream gamers.

The focus on older titles like Skyrim suggests it wanted to tap into the zeitgeist more than show off something new and powerful, so here's hoping we see some more new games before the launch in March.

It's the versatility that Nintendo wants to sell you on with the Switch though. It can work in just about any scenario. Whether you want to play on the sofa with a controller, on the train or plane with motion controls, in a public setting with friends on the same system, or with opponents on their own Switch - whatever you want to do, the Switch can cater to it.

Of course once again Nintendo wants to sell us on the idea of needing yet another screen, but I've used my Wii U a lot, so it's not that bizarre an idea.

What do you guys think of the Switch and the games we've seen so far?
