New consoles could launch as soon as 2019

A job listing for a position at Infinity Ward has some speculating that we may see an entirely new generation of consoles in 2019. That would be some form of new Xbox and some form of new PlayStation -- Nintendo may debut a new Switch, but it will be a refresh in line with the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro if that's the case.

The game designer position at Infinity Ward suggests that whoever ends up with the role will enjoy being part of an "exciting, unannounced next-gen title." While that could mean being part of the next Call of Duty game's development, as Kotaku points out, there's no guarantee that CoD is coming out in 2019, that Infinity Ward will be the one to develop it, or that it's not working on multiple projects at once.

If it was to develop a new CoD, it may be that this close to the next-generation cycle of consoles, that it will straddle the two, as we saw with the earliest games on the Xbox One, which were also made available with lower graphical fidelity on the Xbox 360.

Remember those days of 1080p and 60 FPS controversies?

Combine this latest rumor with other suggestions from Microsoft that it is working on new hardware for a next-gen console, and that AMD's Navi graphics chip is likely to find its way into the next-gen PlayStation -- with a suggested 2019 release date for that particular hardware -- it's looking increasingly likely that we will at least catch a glimpse of the next consoles next year.

What would you like the new-gen systems to be like?
