Metal Gear Solid 5 will let you invade other people's games

Apparently Metal Gear Solid 5 has some MMO elements now. Following on from news that the development has been troubled, over budget and has dropped Konami long-standing developer Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid 5 is now shaping up to be quite a different game than was previously thought.

Shown off in a new gameplay demo at Gamescom, we saw how when players have expanded Mother Base enough, they can establish Forward Operating Basis, which lets them take part in a massively multiplayer element online.

This mode can help players build up resources much more quickly, as they can raid friends' bases. They'll have to deal with the security measures those players have set up, in a semi-mini-game setting, but the real danger is that if the other player is online too, they can rush back to base to defend it and even bring in some of their other (more trustworthy) friends to help.

All of this is entirely optional however. If you don't want your base raided, don't want to defend it and instead just want to enjoy the main campaign, you can do. Just be aware that if you step online, things can get a little more competitive.
