GTA V online may be dropped at some point

Grand Theft Auto might be an enduring franchise that has continued to smash records with every release, but it may not go on forever. Indeed Rockstar is very unlikely to continue to even support GTA V online indefinitely, as Take Two alluded to in a recent chat.

Reported by GameSpot, Take Two said that "we have to rest the franchise at some point," on the subject of Grand Theft Auto.

That doesn't mean it's about to shut it all down though. Indeed the next big content release is set to arrive in less than a week's time and there are many more DLC packs planned for the future, some of which Rockstar has described as "massive" and "feature rich."

However there will come a time when GTA needs to be put to bed, at least for a while.

"We do expect GTA Online's results to moderate because October will be three years since we released it," Take Two said. "Not only was it not our intention that GTA Online was permanent, but it's important that it not be permanent. We have to rest the franchise at some point."

Hopefully when that happens, someone will get some private servers running so those who want to continue playing can do so. That said, it seems hard to imagine Take Two resting its biggest cash cow. GTA 6 would likely break new records if it maintains the quality level of V, so why wouldn't it make another GTA?
