GoldenEye Source just got a big update

It's been a long time since we awkwardly side strafed to avoid fire from that spraying Kobb, or ducked through a door as someone opened up with their RC-P90, but perhaps it's time to step back into that James Bond classic that is, GoldenEye, as the Source modification of it just got its first big update in three years.

A total conversion mod for Half Life 2, GoldenEye Source is a project that's been in the works for years and years, but hasn't released so much as a new map or weapon since 2013. That all changed this week. With the release of version 5.0, the developers have gifted the community with a number of new maps to play on, as well as a new introduction by way of the first Dam level from the single player game.

It has been tweaked to be more competitive focused, since the original Dam was very linear and wouldn't provide much in the way of multiplayer action unless it was some form of defence mode.

"The layout of the map had to be altered to allow for more interesting and engaging gameplay, while also staying true to the original," one developer wrote. "One example of how this was achieved was by creating an entirely new sewer system that creates a path between the front and back sides of the map. It was important to give people a choice on where to go, and not force them to go in any one specific direction."

Players can also expect to battle it out in Aztec, Bunker, Depot and Caverns, making 25 levels to play on in total. now. Strafe running is now possible, which should mean gameplay becomes a bit more nuanced moving forward.
