Friday XIII DLC code thieves made more than $20,000 reselling them

One of the most oft-complained about aspects of the Friday XIII asymmetrical horror action title -- beyond Jason's grab range -- has been the so-called Savini Jason skins. Rewarded exclusively to Kickstarter backers, the Jason skin was slightly more powerful than your average Jason, making those who didn't have it annoyed and those who did rather keen to use it -- occasionally skewing the game in what some considered an unfair direction.

As such, Savini Jason has been rather popular among resellers, especially among those who no longer or don't wish to play the game. That created quite a popular market for the skin codes, so when someone was able to steal a few hundred of them, they've ultimately made quite a killing reselling them online.

GunMedia and many others previously thought the keys were being sold by a legitimate early backer, assuming they had bought multiple copies early on. That turned out not to be the case.

"We previously assumed that backer-content keys being sold on eBay were the same as you; a fan who got in early and purchased extra keys," it said in a statement. "After reviewing the information that you have posted, it is absolutely clear that this is not the case. With some investigation, we quickly determined that the keys being sold come from a theft at one of our distribution partners."

It turns out that the person in question was likely a contractor at Limited Run Games, a partner of GunMedia that produced limited physical copies of the game. That person may have not only stolen codes, but also limited edition collectables related to the game too.

Limited Run Games has now stopped using temporary workers and will be moving into new offices with greater security moving forward, as per PCGamer. In the meantime, that particular contractor, whoever they are, made upwards of $20,000 reselling the codes.
