Forza is latest game series to ditch loot boxes

The pushback against loot boxes and randomized rewards in gaming continues apace with Forza developer Turn 10 being the next in line to pull the microtransaction mechanic from their games. "Prize crates," as they're called in Forza Motorsport 7, are being pulled from the game completely, and Turn 10 has pledged to not put its paid token system into the upcoming Forza Horizon 4.

The change to Motorsport 7 won't be immediate though, as Eurogamer highlights, because much like games like Star Wars: Battlefront 2, much of Motorsport 7 was built around the idea of prize crates being a popular mechanic. With so many of the game's systems linked with the loot crate system, it will take some time to untangle it all.

Right now, they've been changed to offer no kind of competitive advantage and instead only unlock cosmetic upgrades such as driver gear and mods that can improve your ability to earn extras in single player modes. Previously you had to use prize crates to unlock specific cars but that's been changed and those cards are now just unlocked for everyone.

In the future though, they'll be removed entirely. This provides a solid indication that we won't be seeing these kinds of random paid-for rewards in future Forza games, and potentially any future Microsoft-published games either. That could have a big impact on the gaming industry and may mean that the trend begins to die off industry-wide.

Fingers crossed.
