Pokemon fans have been clamouring for a fully realised game in the series for the best part of two decades, but Nintendo, Game Freak and the Pokemon Company have always maintained that it's an experience is best enjoyed on a portable console. While that isn't changing any time soon, Nintendo did announce earlier this year that it was changing the formula with the next iteration in the series.
Called Pokemon Go, it's an augmented reality game which will see Pokemon fans having to go to real world locations to find the rarest and most powerful species. While we still don't know much about the game, it may be that it looks a bit like this leaked test footage.
Recorded at this year's SXSW event, the video shows a map screen, showing player location and that of a nearby Pokemon layered over the real world video image.
Players are then able to select a number of different Pokeballs to throw at the wild creature, eventually capturing it and locking it away for use later.
There's many of the usual Pokemon tenets, like the Ivysaur's type, health and experience level. There's also player experience to consider too, which could be tied to equipment and abilities.
For now this is all we know, but it's an exciting look at what Pokemon Go may be like when fully realised. Are you pumped for an augmented reality Pokemon game?
