First Oculus Rift CV1 headsets now shipping

The first Oculus Rift CV1 headsets are today heading out of the door of the Oculus VR studios and will begin landing on the doorsteps of eager VR fans on Monday, March 28. This hails the beginning of the new age of commercial VR, bringing to a close the last three and a half years of developer kits, speculation and hype.

Finally consumer VR will be in the hands of the public for the first time.

This news was confirmed by both Oculus founder Palmer Luckey and Oculus CEO, Brendan Iribe, who said that they both couldn't wait for end-users to get their hands on the hardware.

Much like the DK1, it ships in a fancy case, but unlike that early developer kit, this one comes with a free-standing Constellation tracking camera, an Xbox One controller and a wireless remote control for media viewing.

It will also come with codes for copies of both Luckey's Tale, the 3D platforming, classic style game with a VR element thrown in and Eve Valkyrie, letting players take to the stars in their own space ship to hunt one another down for sport.

The Rift is shipping out a few days before competitor headset, the HTC Vive, which will start arriving in early April, though it does come with room-scale tracking and motion controllers from the get go.
