DotA 2 Player Numbers Break New Records After Release

DOTA 2

Those of you that have been playing DotA 2 throughout the beta, can now count yourself as one in just four million others, according to official statistics for this month's player numbers - and in-case you didn't realise, we're only half way through it so far.

Since the game was officially released on July 9th, the floodgates opened, as the free to play game became available to anyone, not just those with an invite.

Of course with a two year beta period, it had become pretty easy for anyone that wanted an invite to get one, but there are still those people that didn't want to go to the hassle of asking for one or don't have a friend who would help them out - those people are now diving in.

On top of that, there's all those that were waiting for DotA 2 to be considered a complete game before they began checking it out. No doubt a few of them come from rival MOBA titles like League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth and their contemporaries.

While DotA 2 still has a ways to go before it hits the lofty heights of LoL, with its 12 million + daily players and 30 million a month, it's well on its way to being a direct competitor. The prize pools are getting bigger and bigger and all this in a week after launch. Sure there's been a lot of build up, but with Valve's Steam workshop bringing new content at a rate Riot Games can only dream of, the spiritual successor to the original Warcraft III map, looks set to do very well indeed.

Which of the big MOBAs do you guys play?
