Don't Starve sells its one millionth copy

Klei Entertainment, the developer behind such hits as Mark of the Ninja and more recently Don't Starve, has announced that in the last few weeks of 2013, its procedurally generated, sandbox, survival sim, had broken through the million players barrier.

Much of that is thanks to the game's inclusion in Sony's Playstation Plus scheme, so much so in-fact that the developers are now talking about making the game available on the PS Vita handheld. The basis for it is there too, since people have already been playing the game via PlayStation streaming to their vita.

Thanks to the PS Plus inclusion, Klei believes that more people checked the game out than would otherwise have done so, since it has somewhat of a unique look that is distinctly not mainstream, despite the large number of open world survival games now beginning to populate the world of PC gaming.

There will also be the upcoming DLC available for all platforms, though that may take a bit longer to implement than on the PC.

When Edge asked the developer about sequels however, it was a lot more coy, saying that the company would only develop it if there was a real reason to not simply expand the original.

"We like to explore new things and challenge ourselves," the developer said. "We’ve done everything from puzzle games, to 2D brawlers, to stealth, and now survival with Don’t Starve. We feel pretty strongly about not doing sequels unless you have something really new to bring to table. It’s definitely a possibility, but we’ll need to take some time to think about the best way to revisit [Don’t Starve] if we do."

At the moment Klei Entertainment is working on a turn based espionage title, recently renamed to Invisible Inc.
