Discord takes on Steam and GoG with new game store

Discord, the chat, call, and social network messaging service, has announced that it's entering the digital distribution game with its very own game store. It will give away a number of games for free as part of its monthly Nitro subscription service, and it will sell games directly as part of a new curated platform that will offer a similar, although not identical experience to other game stores like GoG and Steam.

"Three years ago, we set out to bring people together around games. Now, we’re going to bring the games to you," reads the Discord statement on the news. It's been gradually rolling out the beta of the store to more and more of Discord's users and today, everyone can join in on the fun.

The big difference between Discord's store and others though, is that it will be heavily curated. You aren't going to find every game on there, with only games that the Discord developers consider good and enjoyable experiences likely to make the cut. There's no clear definition of what they want to have on the store, but know that it will likely mean the most niche titles and those with explicit content will be unlikely to feature.

Early additions include SOMA, Inside, Torchlight 2, and Shadow Tactics.
