Dell Brings Back Windows XP

Dell Brings Back Windows XP

Like many computer makers, Dell has switched nearly entirely to Vista-based systems following Microsoft's launch of the new OS in January. But now, thanks to customers's feedback, Dell is offering Windows XP again on some of its systems.

A request for Windows XP on Dell's ideastorm site received more than 12500 votes, making it among the most popular requests but well below top picks such as adding Linux or OpenOffice.org to its PCs.

"We heard you loud and clear on bringing the Windows XP option back to our Dell consumer PC offerings." said Dell on their Ideas in Action page. "The following Dell consumer systems with Windows XP are now immediately available on Dell.com:
Dell Inspiron: 1405, 1705, 1505, 1501
Dell Dimension: E520, E521"

Microsoft who plans to stop offering Windows XP by the end of this year has commented sharply: "Dell is responding appropriately to a small minority of customers that had this specific request. But, as they have said before, the vast majority of consumers want the latest and greatest technology, and that includes Windows Vista."
