Could Massive turn The Division into a Battle Royale game?

With the monumental success of both PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite, it's no wonder that a number of developers are jumping on the band wagon and trying to offer their own comparable experience. We already heard of a number of companies, including Activision, which are working on their own Battle Royale games or game modes, but the latest could be Massive Entertainment, the developer of The Division.

This is only a rumor for now, but it suggests that alongside a sequel to The Division, Massive has a battle royale game in the works. It could be that it's creating a battle royale game mode for The Division, or it might be just planning to use some assets from it. Either way, the word on the street is that Massive is creating an open world, PVP shooter too.

According to the publisher of The Division, Ubisoft, asked Massive Entertainment to look into the idea of a battle royale game (mode?) earlier this year and it was told that Massive should be able to make something quite quickly. That makes sense if you imagine it leveraging The Division or its assets to build something comparable to PUBG considering the type of game The Division is.

A quick turnaround is likely necessary too, as if we've learned anything from these sorts of games in recent years -- DayZ, H1z1, etc. -- their lifespan isn't great, so if Ubisoft and Massive want to ride the wave of battle royale games which are sweeping popular gaming at the moment, there's no time like the present.
