Blizzard is adding War Chests to StarCraft 2

Along with RPG mechanics, one cross-genre feature that has done gangbusters business in the last few years are randomised unlockables. Whether you're talking about card booster packs in CCGs, or chests in a number of others, that ability to unlock random items to augment your side of the online battle has proved hugely successful for a number of games and now StarCraft 2 is hopping aboard that bandwagon.

Each race in StarCraft 2 will soon have a seasonal subscription box, called War Chests. In it players will be able to find skins, sprays, decals and more, released in three, monthly phases (as per PCGamesN). Some items will come out of the chest itself, while others will become unlockable in-game, forcing you to earn your aesthetic extras, as well as pay for them.

The War Chests for each race cost $10 a piece, or you can dish out $25 and unlock one for each of them. While we don't have the fine details on pricing, individual unlocks will also go on sale in the near future, letting those with more money than time, buy them outright instead of grinding away.

Although this might seem like an odd move for a relatively old game at this point, Blizzard is taking a leaf out of Valve's book and will use 25 percent of all purchases to help fund its Blizzcon 2017 prize pool, up to $200,000.

The first phase of War Chests will go out on July 19.
